Achilles Tendonitis
Definition:
A common condition that causes pain along the back of the leg near the heel. The Achilles tendon the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel.
Achilles Tendonitis is when the Achilles tendon becomes inflamed due to injury or disease which often causes swelling, pain or irritation.

Common symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis include:
- Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon in the morning.
- Pain along the tendon or back of the heel that worsens with activity.
- Severe pain on the day after exercising.
- Thickening of the tendon.
- Bone Spur
- Swelling that is present all the time and gets worse throughout the day with activity.
Biomechanical Aetiology:
Orthotic Treatment:
Heel raise or a heel cup to elevate the heel so that pain will be relieved. In more severe case foot orthotics will be required.
Treatment:
By preventing excess subtalar joint pronation orthotics assist reduction of internal tibial
rotation and reduce medial tractional forces upon anterior tibialis and posterior tibialis
muscles. This provides an effective solution to shin splints pain.
Exercises:
- A calf muscle stretch can help to strengthen the calf muscles and reduce stress on the Achilles tendon
